Packaging your parcel for international delivery
Your international parcel will travel hundreds, if not thousands of miles, and will be handled at several different points throughout its journey. For this reason, we advise taking a little extra care when packing your international parcel. Follow our top tips for packing an international parcel to ensure it reaches your recipient safely and in the same condition as it was sent.
Tip 1: If sending multiple items, wrap each one tightly with bubble wrap and seal with tape
Tip 2: Use a sturdy box – we recommend using a double-walled box, especially for heavier items
Tip 3: Fill any unused space within the box – you can use foam pellets or even newspaper for this
Tip 4: Seal the box with a strong tape (approximately 40-50mm)
Remember to not send any prohibited or restricted items. International shipping rules can differ from country- to- country, so if you are at all unsure, look on the relevant country page.
What customs documentation will you need?
When sending a parcel to a country outside of the EU, a customs invoice will need to accompany your parcel. This is used by customs officials and gives them information about the sender, recipient, and what’s inside the parcel.
When you fill in our booking form to use our worldwide delivery services, we’ll generate the right paperwork for your shipment so you just need to affix it to your parcel. Make sure you provide as much detail as possible in order to avoid delays, for example, instead of giving a description of ‘clothing’, you should put ‘Men’s knitted jumper, 70% cotton and 30% polyester.
You currently only need to provide this information when sending items to countries outside of the EU. However, following the Brexit transition period, you may need to provide additional information when sending to EU counties too.
When are duties and taxes due?
Duties and taxes are due on any parcels which are sent outside of the EU. Your recipient will be billed for this, however, as the shipper you are ultimately liable should your recipient refuse the parcel or refuse to pay. For more information, take a look at the HM Revenue & Customs website and take a look at the country you are sending to.
