About Lesotho

Lesotho is an enclaved landlocked country that is completely surrounded by South Africa. Roughly translated, the name means “the land of the people who speak Sesotho”. A scene of conflict among tribes for many centuries, the area formerly named Basutoland gained its independence in 1966 to become Lesotho. Located in mountainous terrain, it is the southernmost landlocked country in the world and it experiences a varied climate. Winters can be cold and snow is common in the highlands between May and September while the lower lands where the capital Maseru is based can experience upwards of 30°C temperatures in the summer.

Due to Lesotho’s location, it is strongly integrated with the economy of South Africa. The majority of exports come from clothing and footwear along with wool, mohair and food stocks. Much of the country’s economy is reliant on workers’ remittances from those who have jobs in the neighbouring country.
