About Niger

Niger takes its name from the Niger River that flows through the country and is the largest nation in West Africa. However, 80% of its land is covered by the Sahara Desert which means the majority of the country’s population are found in the far south and west.

Niger borders Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Mali, Algeria, Libya and Chad and is roughly twice the size of France – its former colonial ruler. Independence was granted in 1958.

Nearly all of Niger’s climate is hot and dry, with temperatures rarely recorded that are below 30C. The vast majority of land is desert plains and sand dunes, although some hilly regions can be found in the north while flat savannah is found in the south.
