Do I need to deal with Polish customs?
Yes. Since the UK left the EU, all shipments from the UK to Poland are treated as international exports and require customs documentation.
Don’t worry - when you book online with DHL eCommerce UK, we’ll automatically generate all the necessary customs forms for you. Just make sure to accurately describe your items and declare their true value.
CUSTOMS DECLARATION (INVOICE)
The customs declaration (also known as a customs invoice) provides Polish Customs (Krajowa Administracja Skarbowa) with details about your parcel’s contents, value and purpose.
To ensure fast clearance:
- Be specific: “Ladies' linen dress” instead of “clothing”.
- Be accurate: Always declare the true item value.
- Be complete: Include the recipient’s full address and contact number.
All customs paperwork is created automatically when you complete your DHL eCommerce UK booking.
DUTIES, TAXES AND IMPORT FEES
- VAT (23%) and customs duties may apply depending on your parcel’s contents and value.
- Low-value shipments under €45 (personal gifts approximately £39 in value) usually clear without fees.
- Commercial goods under €150 (approximately £130) are typically exempt from customs duties but still subject to VAT.
- Duties and taxes are payable by the recipient before delivery can be completed.
If import charges are not paid, Polish Customs may return or dispose of the shipment. To avoid delays, always make sure your recipient is aware that import fees may apply.
WHAT ITEMS CAN'T I SEND TO POLAND?
Before booking parcels to Poland make sure to check your item is OK to go there; it’s easy to forget that normal, everyday products are in some cases restricted to send to certain countries.
Products such as alcoholic drinks, money and passports are on our prohibited list so take a look at the full list before you send.
Further examples of items you can’t post to Poland include:
RESTRICTED AND PROHIBITED GOODS
|
Food |
Illegal and dangerous |
Other |
| Meat and poultry
|
Drugs / Medications |
Jewellery over $500 |

*Please be aware that we also have our own prohibited items list, in addition to country-specific restrictions.
POLISH TAX-SENSITIVE GOODS REGULATIONS (SENT ACT)
Since 1st May 2017, the Polish government has required monitoring of certain ‘tax-sensitive’ or ‘excise-risk’ products transported by road, under its SENT (System Elektronicznego Nadzoru Transportu) legislation.
These controls are designed to prevent tax fraud and ensure full traceability of specific liquid and fuel-based goods.
As a result, the following products cannot be shipped to Poland via DHL eCommerce UK:
- Alcohol and alcoholic beverages
- Acrylic alcohols
- Antifreeze or de-icing fluids
- Biodiesel and fuel oils
- Dried or loose tobacco
- Paint or varnish removers
- Oils of any kind (including lubricants, engine oils, and cooking oils)
- Liquids of any form (including solvents or liquid chemicals)
These restrictions apply to both personal and commercial shipments. Attempting to send these items may result in customs seizure, fines, or return to sender.
While Poland isn’t the furthest of destinations from the UK, we still recommend you take care with packaging. Your parcel will pass through multiple depots with automated sorting machines as well as manual handling.
Here are some key tips to help you package your parcel securely.
- Invest in a Strong Box: Always use a new, robust, double-walled cardboard box. Reused or compromised boxes significantly increase the risk of damage.
- Prevent Movement: Fill all empty spaces inside the box with packing peanuts, shredded cardboard, or other void fillers to provide crucial stability and prevent shifting during transit.
- Seal for the Journey: Use durable, pressure-sensitive packing tape (at least 48mm wide) to seal all openings and seams securely. The ‘H-tape’ method offers superior security.
- Individual Protection: Give each item its own layer of defence. Wrap everything separately with generous cushioning like bubble wrap or foam to absorb shocks.
