About Namibia

Namibia borders Zambia, Angola, Botswana and South Africa, as well as the Atlantic Ocean, and was formerly known as South West Africa. A small strip of land runs between Angola and Botswana to the north east of the country and this would also share a border with Zimbabwe were it not for the Zambezi River – less than 200 metres of river separates the two!

Independence from South Africa was gained in 1990. Much of Namibia is very dry and as a result it is the second least densely populated country on Earth, behind only Mongolia. It has the least rainfall of all countries in sub-Saharan Africa and is situated between the Namib and Kalahari deserts. The former stretches along Namibia’s entire coastline.

The mining industry is particularly strong, with gem diamonds, uranium, gold, silver and base metals all exported.
