About Benin

Benin is officially known as the Republic of Benin and is situated in the West Africa. The majority of the population live on its small southern coastline, situated on the Gulf of Guinea which is known as the most tropical part within the Atlantic Ocean. The capital of the country is Port-Novo; however the seat of government is located in Cotonou which is Benin’s largest city and the economic capital.

On August 1st 1960, Benin gained its independence from France and Benin’s first flag was first officially raised on their day of independence to replace the French flag. French is the official language of the country; although Fon and Yoruba are commonly spoken.

Benin’s covers an area of approximately 115,000 square kilometres and holds a population of 9.98 million. Situated in a tropical location, with sub-Saharan climates, the country is highly dependent on agriculture, with much of Benin’s employment originating from subsistence farming.
