Do I need to deal with French customs when shipping to France?
If you're sending a parcel to France from the UK, it must go through customs clearance as France is a member of the EU. To ensure a smooth journey for your parcel, you must provide a customs invoice with your shipment.
Don’t worry. This may sound tricky, but it's actually very simple to do - just complete the 'customs declaration' section of our booking form. We'll use the information you provide to generate a customs invoice on your behalf (this will print with your label once you've paid for your booking). It’s that easy!
IMPORT DUTIES AND VAT
All goods shipped from the UK to France are subject to customs clearance. The recipient may be liable for Import VAT and customs duties.
- VAT: All goods are subject to VAT, regardless of their value. The standard French VAT rate is 20%.
- Import Duty: Parcels with a value of €150 or less are exempt from import duty. For parcels with a value over €150, import duty is charged based on the type of goods.
- Payment: The recipient in France is responsible for paying any duties, VAT, and administrative fees before the parcel can be delivered.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION
A complete and accurate customs declaration is required for every shipment.
- Commercial Invoice: This is a mandatory document for all parcels. It must clearly state the sender's and recipient's details, a detailed description of the contents, and the declared value.
- EORI Number: If you are a business sender, your business must have a UK EORI number. For Business-to-Business (B2B) shipments, you will also need to include your recipient's EORI (Economic Operator Registration and Identification) number on the customs forms.
For more information, please visit the official French Customs Authorities (La Douane) website. Gov.uk also has information on tax and customs considerations for the UK side of the process.
What items can't I post to France?
When sending a parcel to France, it is your responsibility to ensure its contents are allowed into the country. Failure to comply can result in your parcel being denied entry, returned, or even destroyed.
For a comprehensive list of all prohibitions and restrictions, we recommend checking the official French Customs Authorities (La Douane) website.
Some common examples of items you can’t post include:
RESTRICTED AND PROHIBITED GOODS
|
Food |
Illegal and dangerous |
Other |
|
Perishables |
Drugs |
Counterfeit items |
|
Meat and fish |
Explosives |
Protected animals and plants |
*Please be aware that we also have our own prohibited items list, including items that we are not able to deliver, in addition to country-specific restrictions.
Even though France is just 21 miles across the Channel, your parcel still travels through multiple depots and sorting hubs - so good packaging is essential. We’ve prepared some handy advice and guidance to help you prepare:
- Use a Strong Outer Box: Always use a new, robust, double-walled cardboard box. Reused or compromised boxes significantly increase the risk of damage.
- Prevent Movement: Fill all empty spaces inside the box with packing peanuts, crumpled paper, or other void fillers to provide crucial stability and prevent shifting during transit.
- Seal for the Journey: Use durable, pressure-sensitive packing tape (at least 48mm wide) to seal all openings and seams securely. The ‘H-tape’ method offers superior security.
- Individual Protection: Give each item its own layer of defence. Wrap everything separately with generous cushioning like bubble wrap or foam to absorb shocks.
