PORTUGUESE CUSTOMS INFORMATION – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Although Portugal is part of the European Union, since the UK left the EU, parcels sent from the UK to Portugal are now treated as international shipments and must include customs documentation.
Don’t worry - when you book online with DHL eCommerce UK, we’ll automatically generate all the necessary customs forms for you. Simply provide clear and accurate details about your parcel’s contents during the booking process, and we’ll take care of the rest.
CUSTOMS DECLARATION INVOICE
A customs declaration (also known as a customs invoice) gives Portuguese Customs (the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (AT)) information about what’s inside your parcel and its value. This helps ensure your shipment clears customs without delay.
To make sure your parcel travels smoothly, please ensure your declaration is:
- Detailed: Describe each item clearly and specifically (e.g. “Men’s cotton T-shirt, size M” rather than “clothing”).
- Accurate: Declare the true value of your items, even if they’re gifts.
- Complete: Include full recipient details (name, address, and contact number) so customs can reach your recipient if needed.
We’ll automatically include these details on your paperwork based on what you enter when booking.
DUTIES, TAXES AND IMPORT FEES
When sending a parcel to Portugal from the UK, your shipment may be subject to VAT and import duties. These are calculated by Portuguese Customs based on the value, category, and origin of your goods.
- Low-value gifts (under €45 – approximately £39) and personal items may clear without additional fees.
- All commercial goods imported from the UK into Portugal are subject to VAT (currently 23% standard rate in mainland Portugal).
- Import duties are only applied to consignments with a value exceeding €150 (approximately £130).
- Any charges applied by Portuguese Customs or handling fees must be paid by the recipient before delivery can be completed.
If these duties or taxes aren’t paid, Portuguese Customs may return the parcel to the UK or dispose of it. To avoid delays, ensure your recipient is aware that additional import fees may apply before the parcel is delivered.
WHAT ITEMS CAN'T I SHIP TO PORTUGAL?
As with all deliveries outside the UK, please ensure that your parcel contents are allowed into the destination country. Failure to do so could result in additional charges, the parcel being refused entry and/or destroyed.
For more detail on what’s prohibited and restricted in the country you’re sending to, visit the Universal Postal Union - prohibitions and restrictions.
Some examples of items you can’t post to Portugal include:
RESTRICTED AND PROHIBITED GOODS

On its journey to Portugal, your package will pass through several depots, each with automated sorting machines. So, we’ll always advise you to take extra care when packing your parcel, ready for delivery.
We’ve prepared some advice to help you pack safely and securely:
- Invest in a Strong Box: Always use a new, robust, double-walled cardboard box. Reused or compromised boxes significantly increase the risk of damage.
- Prevent Movement: Fill all empty spaces inside the box with packing peanuts, shredded cardboard, or other void fillers to provide crucial stability and prevent shifting during transit.
- Seal for the Journey: Use durable, pressure-sensitive packing tape (at least 48mm wide) to seal all openings and seams securely. The ‘H-tape’ method offers superior security.
- Individual Protection: Give each item its own layer of defence. Wrap everything separately with generous cushioning like bubble wrap or foam to absorb shocks.
