Dutch customs when shipping to the Netherlands

In the past, a customs document was only needed when sending parcels outside the EU. However, since 1 January 2021, a customs document is also needed when sending parcels to EU countries (including the Netherlands).

If you are unfamiliar with this process, don't worry - it's quick and easy to do. Simply fill in the Customs declaration section of our booking form and we'll use the information you provide to generate a customs document which will print with your label.

HM Revenue & Customs has more information on tax and customs considerations for the Netherlands.

It’s up to you to ensure your parcel’s contents are allowed entry to the Netherlands – if you fail to do so, it may result in extra charges, the parcel being returned to you or even being destroyed. Avoid this by making sure you don’t send anything on the restricted or prohibited items list when you send a parcel to the Netherlands.

What items can't I post to the Netherlands?

As with all deliveries outside the UK, please ensure that your parcel contents are allowed into the country you are sending to. It’s your responsibility to send only acceptable items, so we advise you to check carefully to prevent your parcel being denied entry, returned, or destroyed.

The Dutch customs website will also be able to provide information on what is and is not accepted into Holland. You can also check the Netherlands post office website for further details.

Some examples of items you can’t post to the Netherlands include:

RESTRICTED AND PROHIBITED GOODS

*Please be aware that we also have our own prohibited items list, in addition to country-specific restrictions.

How to package parcels to the Netherlands

Planning to send a parcel to the Netherlands? Although Holland isn’t very far from the UK, we always recommend you take care with packaging; it’s likely your parcel will travel through depots with automated sorting machines, so be sure to pack your items well and use cushioning material inside your parcel to help protect the contents from moving around in transit and getting damaged.

DHL eCommerce UK can transport parcels up to 25kg in weight, and 80 x 80 x 80cm max dimensions. Use a strong and sturdy outer box when sending your package, don’t overfill it, and pack any empty space around the items with bubble wrap, newspaper or parcel chips. Take a look at our handy international packaging guide for tips before you post to the Netherlands.
