DUTCH CUSTOMS WHEN POSTING A PARCEL TO THE NETHERLANDS
As a member of the EU, the Netherlands has specific customs regulations for all parcels entering from the UK. To avoid delays, it's essential that your parcel has the correct customs declaration and is compliant with Dutch import rules.
Unfamiliar with this process? Don't worry - it's quick and easy to do. Simply fill in the customs declaration section of our booking form. We'll use the information you provide to generate a customs document which will print with your label.
IMPORT DUTIES AND VAT
All goods shipped from the UK to the Netherlands are subject to customs clearance, and the recipient may be liable for import duties and Value-Added Tax (VAT).
- VAT: All goods are subject to VAT, regardless of their value. The standard Dutch VAT rate is 21%.
- Import Duty: Parcels with a value of €150 or less are exempt from import duty. For parcels with a value over €150, import duty is charged based on the type of goods.
- Payment: The recipient of your parcel in the Netherlands is responsible for paying any duties, VAT, and administrative fees before the parcel can be delivered.
REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION
A complete and accurate customs declaration is required for every shipment.
- Commercial Invoice: This is a mandatory document for all parcels. It must clearly state the sender's and recipient's details, a detailed description of the contents, and the declared value.
- EORI Number: If you're a business sender, the Dutch recipient may require you to provide your company's EORI (Economic Operators’ Registration and Identification) number on the customs forms.

WHAT ITEMS CAN'T I POST TO THE NETHERLANDS?
When sending a package to the Netherlands, it is your responsibility to ensure its contents are allowed into the country. Failure to comply can result in your parcel being denied entry, returned, or even destroyed.
For a comprehensive list of all prohibitions and restrictions, we recommend checking the official Dutch Customs Administration (Belastingdienst) website. You can also refer to the Netherlands Post Office for information specific to their operational procedures for more guidance.

Although the Netherlands isn't far from the UK, we always recommend you take care with packaging. Your parcel will go through multiple depots on its journey. To help you prepare, we’ve provided some useful tips:
- Invest in a Strong Box: Always use a new, robust, double-walled cardboard box. Reused or compromised boxes significantly increase the risk of damage.
- Prevent Movement: Fill all empty spaces inside the box with packing peanuts, shredded cardboard, or other void fillers to provide crucial stability and prevent shifting during transit.
- Seal for the Journey: Use durable, pressure-sensitive packing tape (at least 48mm wide) to seal all openings and seams securely. The ‘H-tape’ method offers superior security.
- Individual Protection: Give each item its own layer of defence. Wrap everything separately with generous cushioning like bubble wrap or foam to absorb shocks.
