Commonly known as the Republic of Tajikistan, it is a mountainous landlocked sovereign country located in Central Asia. With an estimated eight million people, Tajikistan has been named the 98th most populated country in the world.
It is also the 96th largest country in the world in terms of land area and is bordered on all sides by Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Krygyzstan and China.
It is also seen as one of the wonders of the world by western tourists and unlike other countries in Asia, 2% of Tajikistan is covered by lakes and rivers. Some of the most famous include Kayrakum Reservoir, Iskanderkul, Karakul, Nurek Reservoir and Kulikalon.
Due to the number of stunning mountains located in the country, Tajikistan provides many opportunities for outdoor sports such as mountain biking, rock climbing and snowboarding. Hiking tours are provided up the Fann and Pamir Mountains to both locals and tourists throughout the year, helping to drive the economy.
Football is the most popular sport with the Tajikistan national football team competing in FIFA and AFC competitions around the world. Tajikistan is also the homeland of two very famous athletes: boxing Olympic medallist Mavzuna Chorieva and wrestling champion Yusup Abdusalomov.
Many of the country’s Asian customs and traditions have remained largely untouched within the secluded corners of the country since ancient times and when taking a walk up the mountains there are a number of small villages which inhabit several unique nationalities and even include descendants of Alexander the Great who originally conquered the territory.
