DO I NEED TO DEAL WITH ITALIAN CUSTOMS?
Yes, you will need to provide customs information when shipping a parcel to Italy from the UK. We make the process simple for you.
YOUR CUSTOMS DECLARATION
Since 1st January 2021, all parcels from the UK to Italy require a customs invoice. Don't worry, our booking form automatically gathers the necessary information to generate this on your behalf, which will print along with your shipping label.
To avoid delays, please ensure your declaration is:
- Detailed: Provide specific descriptions (e.g., "Men's cotton t-shirt," not just "clothing"). Vague descriptions are a common cause of holds.
- Accurate: Declare the true value of your items.
- EORI Number (for businesses): If you're a business sending to a business in Italy, providing your recipient's EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number on the form can significantly speed up customs clearance.
- Gifts: Gifts sent between private individuals are generally exempt from duties and taxes if their value is up to €45 (approx. £39), though a declaration is still required.
DUTIES AND TAXES
Duties and taxes may be applied to your parcel by Italian customs. Any outstanding charges will need to be paid by your recipient before the parcel can be delivered. If these charges are not paid, the parcel may unfortunately be returned.
WHAT ITEMS CAN'T I POST TO ITALY?
To make sure your package clears customs smoothly and reaches its destination without a hitch, it’s important to ensure you know what you can and can’t be imported into Italy.
Failure to comply could result in delays, seizure, return of your parcel or additional charges. Here are some examples of what is prohibited or restricted for Italy.
RESTRICTED AND PROHIBITED GOODS
|
Food |
Illegal and dangerous |
Other |
|
Meat, fish and poultry |
Explosives, matches and pyrotechnics | Rubber articles |
| Dairy, eggs and honey | Firearms and weapons | Furs/skins |
| Fish and crustaceans | Fertilisers | Works of art, collectors' pieces and antiques |
*Please note: the list above features some of the most common examples; it is not exhaustive. We also have our own prohibited items list, in addition to country-specific restrictions.
Italy might not seem that far away, but proper packaging is crucial for making sure your parcel remains safe and intact on its journey. We’ve put together the following tips to help you secure you parcel, ready for shipping to Italy.
- Choose a Sturdy Box: Always use a new, strong, double-walled cardboard box for heavier or fragile items. Avoid reusing old or damaged boxes, as they may have lost structural integrity.
- Wrap Items Individually: Individually wrap each item inside your parcel with cushioning materials like bubble wrap, foam, or crumpled paper.
- Fill Void Space: Prevent items from shifting during transit by filling all empty spaces within the box with packing peanuts, shredded cardboard, or other void fillers.
- Seal Securely: Use strong, pressure-sensitive packing tape (at least 48mm wide) to seal all seams and edges of the box. Apply the ‘H-tape’ method (across the opening and along all seams where flaps meet).
- Attach Labels Clearly: Place your shipping label securely on the largest surface of the parcel, ensuring it's flat, visible, and not covered by tape or wrapping.

ITALIAN ADDRESS FORMAT
To avoid any unnecessary delays when you send your parcel to Italy, remember to use the correct address format. Just follow this standard:
- Recipient's Full Name: e.g. ROSSI MARIO
- Street Name and House Number: the house number should always follow the street name, e.g. VIA ROMA 123
- Postcode, Town, and Province Abbreviation: the 5-digit postcode is followed by the town name, then the two-letter province abbreviation, often in capitals, e.g., 00184 ROMA RM
- ITALY: written in all-caps on the final line.
Example:
MARIO ROSSI
VIA ROMA 123
00184 ROMA RM
