CUSTOMS INFORMATION – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE SHIPPING TO CHINA

Posting a parcel to China always requires a customs declaration (or invoice) to inform Chinese Customs about your package contents. Our booking process simplifies this by automatically generating your customs invoice, which prints with your shipping label.

YOUR CUSTOMS DECLARATION

For smooth customs clearance, ensure your declaration is:

  • Detailed: Provide specific item descriptions to avoid delays (e.g., "Men's cotton t-shirt" not "clothing").
  • Accurate: Declare the true value; misdeclarations can lead to delays, fines, or seizure.

DUTIES, TAXES, AND IMPORT FEES

Parcels to China are subject to customs duties and import taxes, which are typically the recipient's responsibility to pay upon arrival. We provide necessary forms but cannot process these payments directly. Non-payment may result in your parcel being returned (at your cost), held indefinitely, or destroyed.

For more information, consult HM Revenue & Customs.

CHINA-SPECIFIC CUSTOMS REQUIREMENTS

Chinese Customs has strict regulations. Pay critical attention to these details:

  • Mandatory Consignee Phone Number: A valid, active phone number for the recipient is essential for all shipments. Invalid numbers will cause significant delays or returns.
  • Personal Use Declaration: For non-commercial goods, the recipient may be contacted to declare personal use.
  • Consignee Identification: Additional recipient ID may be required depending on the item and value.

WHAT ITEMS CAN'T I SEND TO CHINA?

China enforces very strict and specific import rules and regulations, some of which are unique and differ significantly from those in other countries. The Chinese authorities also change these laws regularly, so it is crucial that you re-check the regulations each time you prepare a parcel for China.

Failure to comply with these import rules can lead to severe consequences, including significant delays, additional charges (such as storage, return, or even destruction fees), or the seizure of your parcel by Chinese Customs.

KEY PROHIBITIONS & RESTRICTIONS UNIQUE TO CHINA:

  • Political or Sensitive Materials: China strictly prohibits the import of any materials that promote political opinions with which the government does not agree.
  • "Republic of China" or "Made in China" Markings: Items marked with "Republic of China" or "Made in China" are strictly prohibited and will be confiscated.
  • Cultural & Public Order Items: Restrictions apply to items that could be considered detrimental to China's politics, economy, culture, or public morals.

It is your responsibility as the sender to ensure that you are not sending any prohibited or restricted items into China. Remember, prohibitions and restrictions vary greatly from country to country and can sometimes apply to items you might consider ordinary.

Some examples of items commonly prohibited or restricted for import into China include:

RESTRICTED AND PROHIBITED GOODS

Food

Illegal and dangerous

Other

Milk powder and baby milk

Flammable fuels and liquids

Wood, bamboo, rattan and cane

Meat, poultry and fish products

Drugs (prescription or illicit)

Perfume

Dairy products

Weaponry

Currency

Fruit and vegetables

Firearms

Precious stones, metals and pearls

*Please be aware that we also have our own prohibited items list, in addition to country-specific restrictions. For the most comprehensive and up-to-date list of Chinese import regulations, please visit the General Administration of Customs People’s Republic of China website.

HOW TO PACKAGE PARCELS TO CHINA

Sending a parcel from the UK to China involves a long journey through various depots and automated sorting systems. While we handle every parcel with great care, effective packaging is key to ensuring your items reach their destination safely and in one piece.

We've put together the following essential tips to help you prepare your parcel for its journey to China:

  • Buy a Robust Box: Protect your items from the start. Always use a new, robust, double-walled cardboard box, particularly for fragile or heavy shipments. Reused or compromised boxes significantly increase the risk of damage.
  • Individually Protect Contents: Give each item its own layer of defence. Wrap everything separately with generous cushioning like bubble wrap, foam, or crumpled paper to absorb shocks and prevent items from knocking against each other.
  • Prevent Movement: Stop your items from rattling around. Fill all empty spaces inside the box with packing peanuts, shredded cardboard, or other void fillers to provide crucial stability and prevent shifting during transit.
  • Seal for the Journey: Ensure your package withstands its journey. Use durable, pressure-sensitive packing tape (at least 48mm wide) to seal all openings and seams securely. The ‘H-tape’ method, covering all flap joints, offers superior security.
  • Maximise Label Visibility: Make sure your parcel gets to the right place. Securely attach the shipping label to the largest, flat surface, ensuring it’s completely smooth, visible, and unobstructed for clear scanning.
