SHIPPING TO GERMANY - CUSTOMS INFORMATION YOU NEED TO KNOW
Sending mail to Germany form the UK is pretty straightforward, but there are a few extra steps for customs clearance that you should be aware of.
YOUR CUSTOMS DECLARATION
Since 1st January 2021, all parcels to Germany require a customs invoice. Our booking form gathers all the information needed to generate this on your behalf, so you don’t need to worry. Once your order is complete, the label and five copies of the customs invoice will print off - which you can simply attach to your parcel.
IMPORTANT DETAILS FOR YOUR DECLARATION
- Be Specific: New regulations require highly detailed and accurate descriptions of your goods. Avoid vague terms like ‘clothing’ or ‘gifts.’ Instead, specify ‘men’s cotton t-shirt’ or ‘kids boxed board game.’
- For Businesses: If you are a business sending to a business in Germany, you will also need to provide your recipient’s EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number on the form.
- Sending a Gift: Gifts from one private sender to another with a value of up to €45 (approx. £39) are generally exempt from duties and taxes.
DUTIES AND TAXES
Duties and taxes may be applied to your parcel by German customs, and any outstanding charges will need to be paid by your recipient before the parcel can be delivered. If these charges are not paid, the parcel may be returned to the sender.
WHAT CAN’T I POST TO GERMANY?
To avoid any delays, you should always check whether your package’s contents are allowed into Germany. We’ve compiled a list of common prohibited items to help you.
| Food | Illegal and Dangerous | Other |
| Food of animal origin | Drugs/medications | Currency |
| Foods of non-animal origin | Chemicals | Rough diamonds |
| Unsafe foods | Weapons and explosives | Products from endangered species |
*Please be aware that we also have our own prohibited items list, in addition to country-specific restrictions.
For a full list of restrictions on shipments, you can check the Zoll (German Customs) website.
Proper packaging is crucial for smooth delivery. It helps ensure your parcel arrives in the same condition you sent it in. Your parcel may travel through several depots with automated sorting machines.
Follow these simple steps for a secure shipment:
- Choose the Right Box: Use a new, sturdy cardboard box. A used box may have compromised strength, and old labels could cause delays.
- Wrap Each Item Individually: Cushioning materials like bubble wrap, foam or packing paper will prevent items from knocking against each other.
- Seal it Securely: Use strong, wide packing tape to seal all seams and edges. Apply the tape to form an ‘H’ shape on both the top and bottom of your box.
- Clear Labelling: Remove or cover all old labels and barcodes. Place your new shipping label clearly on the largest side of your box.
