SPANISH CUSTOMS INFORMATION – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
Although Spain is part of the European Union, since the UK left the EU, parcels sent from the UK to Spain are now treated as international shipments and must include customs documentation.
Don’t worry – when you book online with DHL eCommerce UK, we’ll automatically generate all the required customs forms for you. Simply provide clear and accurate details about your parcel’s contents during the booking process, and we’ll handle the paperwork for you.
CUSTOMS DECLARATION INVOICE
A customs declaration (also known as a customs invoice) provides Spanish Customs (Aduanas) with information about your parcel’s contents, value and purpose. This ensures your shipment clears customs smoothly and without unnecessary delays.
To make sure your parcel travels without issue, please ensure your declaration is:
- Detailed: Describe each item specifically – for example, write “cotton T-shirt, size L” instead of “clothing”.
- Accurate: Declare the true value of your items, even if they’re gifts.
- Complete: Include full recipient details (name, address and contact number) so customs can contact them if needed.
DHL eCommerce UK automatically includes these details on your paperwork based on what you enter when booking.
DUTIES, TAXES AND IMPORT FEES
When sending a parcel to Spain from the UK, your shipment may be subject to VAT and import duties. These are calculated by Spanish Customs based on the value, type and origin of your goods.
- Low-value gifts (under €45 / approximately £39) and personal items may clear without additional fees.
- Packages valued at €150 (approximately £130) or less are typically exempt from customs duties, although VAT (currently 21% in Spain) and handling charges may still apply.
- Commercial goods or higher-value items may attract both VAT and import duties.
- Any charges applied by Spanish Customs and handling costs must be paid by the recipient before delivery can be completed.
If these handling fees, duties or taxes aren’t paid, Spanish Customs may return the parcel to the UK or dispose of it. To avoid delays, make sure your recipient is aware that import fees may apply before your parcel arrives.
WHAT ITEMS CAN’T I SEND TO SPAIN?
As with all deliveries outside the UK, please ensure that your parcel contents are allowed into Spain. There are several restricted and prohibited goods when you send a parcel to Spain.
For further details relating to postal shipments, please visit Correos – the national postal courier for Spain and Andorra. You can find more on importing goods into Spain by post here.
Some examples of items you can’t post to Spain include:
RESTRICTED AND PROHIBITED GOODS
|
Food |
Illegal and dangerous |
Other |
| Milk, meat, eggs and fish |
Firearms and ammunition |
Human remains, including ashes |
*Please be aware that we also have our own prohibited items list, in addition to country-specific restrictions.
Your parcel will travel anywhere upwards of 800 to 1,000 miles on its journey to La Piel de Toro. It’ll pass through several depots, automated sorting machines and travel a long journey by road or air. We recommend making sure you take extra care to securely pack your parcel before sending.
Here are some easy-to-follow tips to help you pack:
- Invest in a Strong Box: Always use a new, robust, double-walled cardboard box. Reused or compromised boxes significantly increase the risk of damage.
- Prevent Movement: Fill all empty spaces inside the box with packing peanuts, shredded cardboard, or other void fillers to provide crucial stability and prevent shifting during transit.
- Seal for the Journey: Use durable, pressure-sensitive packing tape (at least 48mm wide) to seal all openings and seams securely. The ‘H-tape’ method offers superior security.
- Individual Protection: Give each item its own layer of defence. Wrap everything separately with generous cushioning like bubble wrap or foam to absorb shocks.
