SELLING ON ETSY

You’ve likely heard of Etsy before, an online haven for selling (or buying) the unique – ranging from candles to art. Some people even sell hand-made jewellery on Etsy.

With almost 8,000,000 people selling on Etsy actively, and more than ten times that actively shopping, there’s an audience for whatever unique items you can create.

Etsy selling, with the right products, can provide a steady side income or blow up and provide you with a small business that you’re managing full-time. But how does it work? How can you get started with selling on Etsy?

We’ve prepared a step-by-step guide on Etsy selling to help you on your way.

STARTING ETSY SELLING

To get started, there’s a few things that you need to consider, and do, to get you into a position where you’re ready for selling on Etsy.

FIGURE OUT YOUR NICHE

First, decide which products you’re going to sell. Browse the website, see who’s selling art on Etsy that you think you could improve, or see where you can find your niche. If you’ve got a specific skill like crocheting or woodworking, lean into that.

Make sure you can make a profit by selling on Etsy. If you decide on a product but it costs you too much to make it, and you’d have to sell it at an extortionate price (which would likely decrease the odds of a sale), then it may be worthwhile opting to sell something else.

It might not be necessary to sell a physical product either – some sellers sell digital downloads like planners or even skins for game characters.

NAIL DOWN BRANDING

While you may not have a physical shop front, you’ve still got to make an impression on customers who are discovering you through Etsy.

For Etsy selling, decide on a name for your shop and create a logo. These won’t necessarily have too much of an impact on your sales, but it can certainly help bring a customer back to you if you’re memorable.

MAKE PRODUCTS LOOK GREAT

This may be the most important part of selling on Etsy. While you could go with similar imagery that may be used on other marketplace websites, or you could go for imagery like other sellers selling similar items, it’s this that will make your product stand out.

Whether you’re selling art on Etsy or something else, try and create or take clear, exciting images of your product to entice customers in.

HOW TO SELL YOUR CRAFTS ON ETSY

Some sellers on Etsy will pre-list items before they are made and provide a longer delivery time to their customer, making something as and when it has been ordered. Others will pre-make items and list them onto Etsy, removing the chance for any custom requests and hoping someone will be interested in their latest creation.

Etsy selling is easy – whether you’re selling art or jewellery on Etsy, or something in between. Simply upload your product with a relevant, exciting description and good imagery. Make sure your pricing is correct – calculate the cost of your time, material and Etsy’s fees, but remain aware that if products are flying off your web store you may have under-priced your items.
