About Sudan

Sudan in the Nile Valley of North Africa is bordered by Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, South Sudan, the Central African Republic, Chad and Libya. It is the third largest country on the continent and shares a coastline with the Red Sea that is more than 500 miles long. The River Nile, running from south to north, splits the country in two.

Much of Sudan’s terrain is flat, although several mountain ranges dissect the country. Rainfall across the country varies, with the north considerably drier than the swamp and rainforest regions found in the south. While the rainy season lasts for around three months in the north from July to September, it can last nearly double that in the south where it begins in June.

Mineral resources can be found in abundance in Sudan, including chromite, copper, gold, granite, iron, nickel, silver and zinc, among many others.

Agricultural production including cotton and peanuts accounts for 80% of the country’s workforce and nearly 40% of the nation’s gross domestic product.
