WHAT IS FULFILMENT BY MERCHANT ON AMAZON?
Wondering what fulfilment by merchant is? It is a method of ecommerce selling where users list products on Amazon – but they manage all storage, product shipping and even customer support.
As Amazon is one of, if not the largest ecommerce websites across the globe, the ability to have your products listed on their marketplace can showcase what you’re selling to a huge audience and potentially increase sales tenfold.
There are several fulfilment methods that Amazon offer, including options where Amazon manage the vast majority of the process – but we’re going to be talking Amazon FBM – fulfilment by merchant.
HOW DOES AMAZON FBM WORK?
Fulfilment by merchant allows the merchant to fulfil orders when their products are sold on the Amazon platform. It’s a great starting place for smaller businesses, while those who outgrow being able to fulfil orders themselves often turn to FBA, or fulfilment by Amazon.
Starting fulfilment by merchant on Amazon is relatively simple and requires just a few steps to get up and running.
LISTING PRODUCTS ON AMAZON’S MARKETPLACE
After you’ve been through the account creation process, listing your products on Amazon is the next step. There are a few things you’ll need to create or produce to help increase the likelihood of a sale, such as:
- Exciting copy to entice prospective buyers.
- Professional imagery and explanatory diagrams.
- Instructional videos showing how the product works.
STORING PRODUCTS IN A WAY THAT SUITS YOU
You could store products in fulfilment centres, that would handle the entire process from picking the order to packaging and shipping it, but if that doesn’t sound like it’d work for you – a storage facility or even your home could offer a short-term solution to storing your product.

THE FEES FOR FULFILMENT BY MERCHANT ON AMAZON
While you may be saving money by not having to pay for your own web domain and the upkeep of your own ecommerce function, there are still fees to be paid for Amazon FBM.
There is a per-item selling fee for each item sold, but this can be waived if you pay for their Professional FBM service which costs around £40 per month. Sellers must also pay a referral fee for selling products on the Amazon website, which can range from 6% to as high as 45%.
